New Research Grants

Congratulations to the Lee College of Engineering professors who received new research and additional funding awards for January, February and March. And a special congratulations to the UNC Charlotte Motorsports Engineering faculty, Dr. Kent Day, Dr. Peter Tkacik, and Dr. Mesbah Uddin, for their research grant awards. A lift of the new awards follows.

UNCC Motorsports Safety Test

Current UNCC Motorsports Engineering students, you last chance to take the UNCC Motorsports Safety Test will be this Friday (3/28/14) from 3:30 to 4:30pm in the Alan Kulwicki Lab. Make sure to review your information from MEGR 2299 and the shop safety rules on the motorsports webpage.

Motorsports Safety Test

As talked about in Motorsports Orientation last week, the Motorsports Safety test will be given this week. You only have one chance to pass the test, which requires getting 4 or less questions wrong on the test. The safety test is on material from MEGR 2299: Intro to Motorsports Engineering class, as well as the Alan Kulwicki Shop rules, which can be found on the Downloadable Documents page on the Motorsports website.

Mission Motorsports Visits UNC Charlotte

Military veterans from the United Kingdom and the United States toured UNC Charlotte’s Motorsports Engineering facilities on Oct. 14th as part of the Mission Motorsports program.

UNC Charlotte Motorsports Names 2013 Kulwicki Scholar

The Lee College of Engineering at UNC Charlotte has awarded its Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to Justin LaDuke of Whitakers, North Carolina. The presentation of the 2013 scholarship will be made Friday October 11 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, prior to the running of the Dollar General 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

As part of the STEMersion program, local school teachers visited the Lee College of Engineering on the afternoon of July 29 to learn about the role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in engineering education, and energy and motorsports research.

Learning About Engineering Through Motorsports

High school students from around the country were at UNC Charlotte last week to learn about engineering as it is involved in motorsports. The 24 high school seniors participated in projects including engine and chassis dyno testing, robotics, civil engineering and various experiments using the latest research tools. They also took a tour of the Hendrick Motorsports race shop, competed with each other in some go-karts and got a ride in the UNC Charlotte NASCAR Sprint Cup car. This was the 5th year for the camp.

Motorsports Research Manager is also Top NASCAR Crew Member

During the week, Kile Stinson is the motorsports research manager for the Lee College of Engineering. On the weekends, he’s part of the pit crew for the #43 NASCAR Sprint Cup team. And this pit team is good, having just won the award as the best crew for the first quarter of the 2013 season.

NCMARC Builds Aero Package for SRT Viper Race Car

In the optimization of a super car, UNC Charlotte motorsports researchers are using super computers and some super brain power to set up a complete computational fluid dynamics modeling and analysis program for an American Le Mans Series racer.

The super car is the SRT Viper GTS-R, which is manufactured by SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. SRT Motorsports is partnering with Riley Technologies, based in Mooresville, N.C., on the design-and-build process for the new SRT Viper GTS-R race cars.

Teammates Honor NASCAR Champion Kulwicki

Gathering 20 years after his death, the teammates of Alan Kulwicki shared a number of colorful stories about the hands-on engineer who was the driver and owner of his NASCAR Winston Cup Championship team.

UNC Charlotte’s Motorsports Alumni Chapter held the event to honor the memory of NASCAR Kulwicki on the 20th anniversary of his death and to raise money for a scholarship fund in his name.

Senior Design Spring Expo 2013

Seniors of The William States Lee College of Engineering presented their year-long senior projects at the college’s annual Senior Design Exposition on May 2, 2013. More than 40 completed student projects were on display at Halton Arena, along with the designs for 20 mid-semester projects.

Winners were named for the top three projects and the community outreach award. In first place was the “Integrated Transformer Monitoring Systems” project sponsored by Schweitzer Engineering Labs. The team was made up of seniors Andrew Gould, Theic Rahlan and Joshua Smith.
