Students participate on teams withing the program, ranging from optimization teams such as Legends Car racing and drag racing, to design and build teams such as Formula SAE and Mini Baja. Students typically drive the cars on these teams. Tryouts are held for the best skilled drivers across the teams. Currently we have available to our students: 1 '83 CAMERO DRAG CAR | .JPG) | Students take the drag cars to Test and Tune Events in Mooresville, NC | 4 FSAE CARS | .JPG) | Students take extensive test data, design new cars, build and test. These cars are tested at local wind tunnels, kinematics, rigs, etc. Our teams also go to national competitions | 2 LEGENDS CARS | | Students race Legends cars on a regular basis at Lowe's Motor Speedway. This includes Summer Shootouts as well as regular events during the academic year. | 2 Mini Baja Cars | .JPG) | Students design, build and test the Baja cars as well as participating in national competitions. |
Testing Equipment Available to Students Students use equipment similar to that found in professional shops: engine dyno, chassis dyno, shock dyno, scales, data acquisition, rapid prototyping etc. Software: - CAD software for mechanical drawings of vehicles
- Finite Element Analysis software for designing components, examining failure modes, etc
- Computational Fluid Dynamics software for simulating aerodynamic forces on the car.
- Dynamics and Kinematics software packages for simulating vehicle dynamics
