Eligibility:

Students eligible the first semester of the Sophomore year with greater than a 2.5 GPA.

Coursework:

The curriculum is identical to the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate curriculum with the following modifications.

For the four technical electives ME students are required to take, Motorsports Concentration students
must choose from the following list or petition for a special exception:

Motorsports Metrology (proposed) 

Motorsports Clinics I, II, and III replace Senior Design I and Senior Design II.  The Clinics focus on motorsports related topics, but Clinics II and III are very similar to Senior Design I and II.  All projects must be approved by the motorsports faculty committee.

Students must maintain a GPA greater than 2.5, and must have a C or better in the four motorsports electives.

Experiential Activities:

In addition to the curriculum above, students in the concentration must meet the following criteria in order to attain a sufficient exposure to motorsports tools and procedures. 

  • Participate on a Motorsports team for 3 full years regardless of transfer status.  Internship with industry race teams may substitute for a maximum of 7.5 months pending approval.  Requirement may be relaxed based on experience and as judged by the motorsports faculty and staff. 
  • Log 40 hours / month in the motorsports laboratory.  Students may partition for a reduced amount of time in the laboratory if they secure a motorsports job providing equivalent experience, pending approval by the motorsports faculty committee.
  • Attend at least 75% of the motorsports seminars bringing in external speakers unless granted an excused absence.
